Colonel Patrick E. Connor founded this site to guard telegraph lines, protect stage routes, prevent Indian hostilities and keep an eye on the Mormon community. The post officially became Fort Douglas at the request of then-President Lincoln in honor of Steven A. Douglas, Lincoln’s opponent in the 1860 presidential election.
